According to Pausanias, Erythrai (Ildırı) was founded by the Cretans. The city, which was ruled by tyrants in the 7th century BC, came under the rule of Lydia in 560 BC. The city remained under Persian rule until it was liberated by Alexander. It is surrounded by stone walls. During the archaeological studies in the city, Athena Temple and Theater dated to the second half of the 7th century BC were unearthed.
Cesme region met with Turkish domination with the Turkish sailor Çaka Bey at the end of the 11th century. Its transition to Ottoman rule is at the end of the 14th century. One of the known Ottoman monuments is Çeşme Castle. The artifacts obtained during the excavations in Çeşme and its surroundings are exhibited in the museum in Çeşme Castle. In addition to the castle, there is also a caravanserai.
According to the Ottoman census of 1893, the number of people living in Çeşme was 30,702. At that time, 88% of Çeşme's population, that is, 26,826 people, consisted of Greeks. The percentage of Turks was 12%.
