It is claimed that Admiral Turgut Reis, from whom he took his name, was born in 1485 in the Karabakh neighborhood of Turgutreis. Turgutreis, which had a closed economic structure until the late 1960s due to the unfavorable transportation conditions, started to change rapidly with the realization of the tourism potential in the Bodrum Peninsula. Turgutreis Municipality was established in 1968. With a population of more than 30 thousand, it is the second largest settlement on the Bodrum Peninsula after the district center.
Akyarlar (Kefaluka), Fener Cape, Karaincir Beach, Aspat (Aspartos), Kadıkalesi and Bağla are some of the important touristic spots in the surrounding area. Located at the western end of the Bodrum Peninsula, Turgutreis further increased its reputation with D-Marin opened in 2003. Sabancı Park and its beaches are places to visit. A market is held in the area on Saturdays. It has a wonderful sunset view.
The name of the settlement, which was previously Karatoprak, was changed to "Turgutreis" on February 11, 1972.
