Tlos was an ancient Lycian city located near the Seydikemer district of Muğla today. The ancient neighbors of the city, which stands out with its defensible mountainous terrain and dominant position over the Eşen Plain, include the cities of Araxa in the north, Wiyanawanda (Oinoanda) in the northeast, Kadyanda in the northwest, Awarna (Xanthos) in the south, Pina (Pınara) in the southwest and Atriya (Telmessos) in the west. Thus, it is understood that the settlement of Tlos spread over a wider geography than any other Lycian city, which is why the term "country" was used for Tlos instead of "city" in Hittite sources. Tlos is the Hellenized version of the name Tlava, which was given to the city by the Lycians, one of the indigenous people of the region. The name of the city is mentioned as Dalava in Hittite documents.
